SPRINGBORO, Ohio (WDTN) - Springboro High School's football team took the field at their first state playoff game Saturday night with heavy hearts.

It was the first game the undefeated team has played without 17 year-old, Shaun Frechette.

The Springboro Junior was on his way to school Thursday morning, when investigators said he went off the side of the road and hit a utility pole. Frechette was pronounced dead at the scene on State Route 741.

Saturday night, Frechette's teammates wore a sticker with his number, 70, on their helmets.  The number was also painted on the field and fans carried signs in support.

"This is a sad time for our school district," said Todd Petrey, Springboro Schools Superintendent, immediately after the crash. "We will do everything we can to bring comfort and support to our school community. Our kids come first. As all who knew Shaun come to terms with this, our priority is on their healing and understanding in the days, weeks and months to come".
