Dozens of fireworks frightened dogs are missing

The stray canines end up at the county shelter

DAYTON, Ohio (WDTN) - Montgomery County Animal Resource Center took in 76 dogs in just three days during the long holiday weekend.

Center director Mark Kumpf believes the sights and sounds of the Fourth of July scared the dogs away from their homes. Now workers at the facility are trying to help people find their missing pets.

Melinda Williams went to the shelter Tuesday morning looking for her two pound dorkie, Bentley but he was not there. She told 2 NEWS she thinks fireworks scared him and he was able to get out of her fenced in yard.

There was a much happier ending for Kenneth Johnson who found his dog Misty. The two arrived within minutes of each other and were reunited.

Kumpf says it's best if people go to the facility with photos of their pets and some form of identification for themselves and not bother calling in advance. The facility is housing over 200 animals at this time and workers and volunteers don't have time to look for every caller.

Kumpf says says missing cats are mot a problem because cats don't seem to be as afraid of fireworks and they tend to be indoors most of the time anyway.

The Montgomery County Animal Resource Center is located at 6790 Webster Street in Dayton and is open everyday.
