DAYTON, Ohio (WDTN) - One man was killed when he was shot in the middle of Sheridan Avenue early Friday morning.

Dante Smith, 32, was hit by at least two shots and was dead before help could arrive, according to police.

Witnesses reported seeing three people leave the scene shortly after the shooting. They were driving a light-colored Oldsmobile.

Police believe the three were involved in an argument of some kind with the victim. It started a few blocks away at a house on Burkhardt Avenue.

Afterwards, the victim started following one of the three up the street. Moments later he was running from that person after someone pulled a gun on him and opened fire, police say.

Neighbors say they heard at least nine shots before seeing the victim fall.

"Immediately I walked to the porch and saw a man stumbling to the corner," one witness who didn't want to be identified says. "He may have fell down one time. He looked at me and died."

Those who live nearby were shocked by the shooting.

"It's a quiet neighborhood," Jamie Priser says. "I've never heard anything like this before."

Police are also investigating a truck they found at the scene. They think it may belong to the victim. Earlier in the night neighbors reported hearing the driver of the truck squeal his tires a number of times around the block.
