DAYTON, Ohio (WDTN) - A Dayton man was fighting for his life overnight, as homicide detectives searched for clues and the suspect they said left him in critical condition.

The 27-year-old man was taken Miami Valley Hospital for a serious head injury.

Dayton police told 2 NEWS he was actually just released from jail and was going to visit his children-- except when he arrived at their mother's home, he found a somewhat surprising scene.

The victim arrived at 514 Baltimore Street to find a man witnesses identify as his cousin, with the mother of his children.

What happened next is still somewhat hazy, but officials said the two men ended up fighting.

During the fight, the victim was knocked unconscious after he hit his head on the ground.

Someone called police to report the assault, and by the time they arrived around 10 p.m., the victim had already been taken to the hospital.

After their initial investigation, and how serious the victim's injuries were, police called homicide detectives to the scene.

We spoke to Lieutenant Wendy Stiver who said they're still gathering information from anyone who may have seen the fight.

"The detectives are speaking to witnesses and there is a person that we believe, an adult male, who was at the scene that we believe may have information about this incident-- who is no longer at the scene," said Stiver.

Lieutenant Stiver also told us there were four children living in the home, but she didn't believe any of them saw the fight.

Stick with 2 NEWS for the latest in the investigation and the victim's condition.
