DAYTON, Ohio (WDTN) - Over 100 years ago, many Germans and other European immigrants moving to Dayton settled in the area now known as St. Anne's Hill.
Among their early gathering spaces was the German Baptist Church located at 1420 E. Fourth Street, which was then called May Street, near Stivers School for the Arts.
The impressive building with beautiful stained glass was a cornerstone of the immigrant community for decades.
Eventually, the church closed and was later transformed into a private residence.
However, neglect and foreclosure have left this historic building vacant and in need of repairs.
After a lengthy four-year court battle, the unique building is scheduled for a foreclosure auction on July 20, 2012 at the Montgomery County Administration Building.
The community is hopeful that a buyer will step forward to revitalize this important structure.
Demand remains strong for downtown housing and historic renovations in Dayton.
For example, the popular rock climbing gym, Urban Krag, is also located in a former church.
Another historic church-turned-residence nearby sold for $180,000 in 2008.
Prospective investors are encouraged to learn more about the neighborhood by clicking here or by visiting the upcoming Garden & Art Tour on June 30, 2012.
