Metro Library needs more space

Dayton, Ohio (WDTN) - While the Dayton Metro Library is busier than ever, library users have made it clear the facilities are inadequate.

Comments range from the buildings need more parking, more computers, dedicated teen and children’s areas, and space for quiet reading.

Half of the libraries do not have a room for children’s programs or computer classes.

The Main Library is out of date, overcrowded and lacks parking.

To address these concerns, the “Libraries for Tomorrow Initiative” was developed.

The plan brings all facilities up to date, allowing traditional services to continue while meeting the growing demand for neighborhood locations where people can gather, learn and share. 

The new plan will offer plenty of books and internet computers, as well as quiet reading rooms and adequate space for activities for all ages, from preschool reading readiness to resume preparation.

Most of the funding for the project will come from a $187 million bond that will be on Tuesday's ballot. 

This bond would cost the owner of a $100,000 home $3.98 a month.

Without the changes in this plan, the library incurs increasing costs for maintaining and operating 21 overcrowded and outdated facilities, which takes funds away from books and operating hours and is ultimately unsustainable.
