Man opens fire in local drug store, taken down by police

MIAMI TWP., Ohio (WDTN) - Police rushed to the Walgreens located at 5901 Springboro Pike after a man opened fire inside the store.

It happened just before 2 p.m. Saturday.

According to police, the man entered the drug store with an automatic rifle with the intent to rob the pharmacy. 

The suspect fired a single round inside the store and demanded Oxycodone and morphine from a pharmacist.

A Miami Township police officer arrived on the scene as the suspect attempted to leave the store.

According to police, the suspect opened fire on the police officer.  Bullets struck several cars in the parking lot, as well as the police cruiser.

The officer returned fire, striking the man in his chest and leg. 

The suspect was rushed to Miami Valley Hospital.  According to police, he underwent surgery and is expected to survive.

No one else was injured, including the officer.

Police are not releasing the name of the suspect until formal charges are filed.

The suspect is facing numerous charges including attempted murder and robbery.

Crews from  Miamisburg, Moraine and the Sheriff's Department also responded and later assisted in the investigation.
