DAYTON, Ohio (AP) - Officials in Dayton say a record number of applicants are seeking to become city police officers, raising hopes the southwest Ohio city can increase diversity in the force.
The city's Civil Service Board says it has already received more than 3,000 applications, with the filing deadline next Monday. Officials will submit demographic information about the pool to the U.S. Department of Justice and to city commissioners.
The city, with help from groups such as Dayton Urban League, has stepped up recruitment of minority candidates. It settled a Justice Department lawsuit more than two years ago that claimed discriminatory hiring practices for its police and fire departments.
