BELLEFONTAINE, Ohio (WDTN) - Federal health investigators have determined the cause of that deadly meningitis outbreak in Bellefontaine.

Officials at Mary Rutan Hospital told 2 NEWS the Centers for Disease Control traced it to an anesthesiologist who cared for two patients in the maternity ward.

One of those patients died.

Hospital officials said the women got the meningitis from the doctor who spoke or breathed on them while he administered spinal anesthesia.

The doctor was not wearing a mask, a policy the hospital has now changed.

The doctor in question is not working while this investigation continues.
