URBANA, Ohio (WDTN) - Fire investigators are blaming a propane gas leak for an explosion that levelled a Champaign County home.
It happened on Kite Road near Thackery at about 11:30 on Sunday night. Investigators said the homeowner, Fred Markel had just come home with his wife when they smelled the odor of gas.
Investigators said Markel was able to shut off the propane tank outside, then started opening windows in his home to get the smell out. When the temperature inside his home dropped, the furnace kicked on, sparking the explosion.
Neighbor, Norm Pence was awakened by the loud boom. "It sounded like a bomb went off, honestly the fire was 30 feet in the air," said Pence.
Pence said he heard cries for help, and found Markel trapped underneath the walls of his burning home.
"When I finally could see him, I pulled on the left arm until we got it out, then the right arm, and then I pulled both arms, and he came out from underneath the back of the house."
Our cameras were rolling when family members showed up on Monday morning, to check out the damage, and thank the neighbor who saved their dad's life.
"He pulled my dad out of the fire, and I feel he saved my dad's life. I'm here to thank him. I can't thank him enough," said the victim's son, Fred Markel. Father and son share the same name.
"My dad's burned up pretty bad, he busted up pretty bad. He's got broken ribs on both sides, a bad back, ruptured spleen, he's in a coma, and is in pretty bad shape. We're all praying for him," said Markel.
Fire investigators said there are some things this homeowner could have done to prevent from getting hurt.
If you ever smell gas, investigators advise get out of your home
quickly, and staying out. Do not go back in there for any reason.
Call the fire department and utility company immediately, and do
not try to ventilate your home by opening doors or windows.
