KETTERING, Ohio (WDTN) - A family of six is homeless after fire destroyed their Kettering home Thursday.

When firefighters arrived at 2038 Malcom Drive, flames were shooting from the windows and roof.

The fire was so intense, firefighters could not get inside and had to attack the fire from their ladder trucks.

Neighbor Missy Smith stood and watched in horror. "What a mess," she said. "It's a total loss. It's so sad."

Linda Tulloch said, "it's just terrible, it's a tragedy. I know they have a little boy, and three daughters. They are just a hardworking, young couple. They are wonderful people."

Neighbor and friend Mark Haggard is trying to help. He collected bags of toys and clothing for the four children. "They are good friends of ours," he said. "They are good people. The house is a total loss. We are just helping them out any way we can."

No one was home when the fire started. The family lost everything including their dog.

The Kettering Fire Department is still investigating how the fire started.
