SPRINGBORO, Ohio (WDTN) - A Springboro school levy failed for the fourth time Tuesday evening, now the district is making its "what-if" budget a reality.
The budget, which includes $1 million in cuts, will go into effect July 1. When that happens, students who live within two miles of their school will have to find their own way to school, according to Tim Dettwiller, District Treasurer. The measurement is curb to curb, meaning from the home's curb to the school's curb.
The new budget will also require students to pay to participate in extra-curriculars. According to Dettwiller, high school athletes will be required to pay $475 per sport, while junior high students will be charged $350 per sport. Band students will have to pay $300 to play.
"Our biggest concern is kids not being able to pay for that. Kids who truly have a hardship situation can petition the athletic director's office and those petitions will be considered as far as waiving those fees," Dettwiller said.
There will be a $1,900 cap per family for extra-curricular fees.
The new budget cuts could carry the school district for two years, but there are still too many variable to say for sure, Dettwiller said. The school is still anticipating changes in state funding and union contracts.
"We've got a lot of things right now we're trying to deal with," said Dettwiller. "Last night was just one answer."
