Surveillance cameras were rolling as two men distracted a jewelry store clerk and swiped a pair of 2 karat diamond stud earrings from the top of a display case. The clerk told police that the men came in earlier in the day and said they wanted to buy earrings for their wife and daughter. Once they'd chosen some jewelry, the pair said they'd come back with the money needed to buy them.
"This is a significant theft which was played out very quickly," said Major John DiPietro, Miami Township Police.
The video shows one of the men distracting the clerk as the other reached over and grabbed the earrings, then put them in his pocket. It appears that there was only one salesman on the floor at the time.
"I think people see that there are opportunities now and they understand there's been certain cutbacks and restrictions," said DiPietro.
Police said the men called each other by the names Tony and Marcus. If you think you can help police track down these suspects, call Crime Stoppers at 222-STOP.
