TROY, Ohio (WDTN) - A former Miami County teacher and coach was sentenced Feb. 23, 2010 for inappropriate relations with a student.

Manuel Perez, 43, pleaded guilty to contributing to the delinquency or unruliness of a minor.

Prosecutors said Perez exchanged hundreds text messages with a student at Milton-Union H.S.

They said he also met with her off school grounds.

The judge sentenced Perez to 180 days in jail. He was also ordered to have no contact with the victim and her family and no contact with a female under 18 years of age without an adult present. He also has to forfeit his teaching certificate and coaching license for five years.

"I feel very remorseful for the mistake I made, Perez said at his sentencing. "I wish things could be different but they're not."

During the sentencing a victim's advocate read a letter on behalf of the girl's family.
