TROTWOOD, Ohio (WDTN) - A family escaped their burning home early Thursday morning despite not having working smoke detectors.

A mother and her two young kids made it out of the house fire that started around 3 A.M. in the 42-hundred block of Freudenberger Avenue, but firefighters say none of their three smoke detectors worked to warn them of the flames.

Once on scene, firefighters say they got the bulk of the blaze out in about 20 minutes. The damage is estimated at about 30-thousand dollars. The Red Cross helped the family find a place to stay.

The cause of the fire is undetermined, but officials say it's suspicious. They plan to have some samples from where the fire started tested to see what may have started it.
