DAYTON, Ohio (WDTN) - Despite all of the dams and levees on the Great Miami River, Tony Coon still lives in one of the high risk areas for flooding in West Carrollton. "My wife has lived here for twenty two years and she has never seen one," says Coon but even with their good luck they still pay hundreds of dollars every year for flood insurance, however some help is here.

In the WDTN viewing area three communites are participating in a plan to bring down flood insurance costs with West Carrollton, Kettering, and portions of Preble County leading the pack. In West Carrollton Gregory Gaines is the Director of City Planning and has helped bring in this federal program. By preparing future projects for possible flooding, educating the public, and going through reams of paper work his department has reduced insurance costs by 10 percent for those in the highest risk areas.

"We've had a flooding risk ever since the city was founded, what we do is administer the national flood insurance program and specifically its call the community rating system." says Gaines.

According to Gaines, the average price per year of flood insurance is up around eight hundred dollars. With the original five percent discount which originated back in 2002 and now another five percent, this could chop off up to 80 dollars a year from your bill.

In order for you to be eligible for this program you must live in an area which is at a high risk for flooding (Bright red area on the map). One must also live in a participating community (West Carrollton, Kettering, or Preble County). We have provided a map of the areas in West Carrollton which are at High Risk for floods and would be eligible for the discount above. If you would like more information please contact your city planner or insurance provider for more information.
