WASHINGTON (AP) - Military officials said the suspected shooter at Fort Hood was a psychiatrist at Walter Reed Army Medical Center for six years before being transferred to the Texas base in July.

The officials had access to Maj. Nidal Malik Hasan's military record. They said he received a poor performance evaluation while at Walter Reed.

The officials spoke on condition of anonymity because military records are confidential.

The Virginia-born soldier is single with no children. He is 39 years old.

He is a graduate of Virginia Tech University, where he was a member of the ROTC and earned a bachelor's degree in biochemistry in 1997. He received his medical degree from the military's Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences in Bethesda, Md., in 2001. At Walter Reed, he did his internship, residency and a fellowship.

A Lexis Nexis search shows he’s lived in Roanoke, Virginia; Arlington, Virginia; Burke, Virginia; Silver Spring, Maryland; and Bethesda, Maryland.

The Virgnia Board of Medicine shows he did his post-graduate work in Washington. The Virginia Board of Medicine shows he had no disciplinary actions on his license. His license is current in Virginia.

According to the Center for Traumatic Stress , Hasan was a Fellow in Disaster and Preventive Psychiatry for the F. Edward Hebert School of Medicine in Bethesda.

According to CTS, he had an MD and a Masters of Public Health. He was also a co-chair on an APA Committee on Psychiatric Dimensions of Disaster.

A public records search shows that there have been no reports of criminal violations other than an old citation for failing to stop for a school bus.
