DAYTON, Ohio (WDTN) - Starting May 21st Dayton Power and Light customers can have their old, working fridges and freezers removed. Even better.. you can earn a twenty five dollar credit towards your energy bill while helping the environment.
Chris Michael watched as Jaco, a Columbus Ohio based de-manufacturer came and pulled his fridge away. Why? To get rid of an old fridge, help the environment, and make a little money.
Michael Dunham is the Director of Energy and Environmental Programs for Jaco and helped head up the operation. "What a lot of people don't know is that refrigerators are environmental time bombs and the CFC 12 which is in a cooling circuit is 7,220 times greater a global warmer then CO2" said Dunham. So when Jaco disposes of just one fridge, its equivalent to taking five tons of carbon dioxide out of the atmosphere. That's like taking one car off the road for an entire year.
"The beauty is people don't have to spend a dime on this program. Just pick up the phone, we'll come get it for free, we'll recycle it properly, we'll send you a check and we'll lower your electric bill." said Dunham. There are some restrictions however. Only residential DP&L customers are eligible. The refrigerator must be empty and in working condition. It must also be 10 to 30 cubic feet in size and you need to have a clear path to access and remove the appliance. Of course only the owner can give permission for it to be picked up and recycled.
