Fire truck goes pink for breast cancer

HUBER HEIGHTS, Ohio (WDTN) - In the past, Huber Heights firefighters have raised money for breast cancer research.  But this year, Chris Williams wanted to do something different.

As the father of three girls, the idea to paint the truck came easily.  Now, the pink fire engine is turning heads everywhere it goes.

"As fast as we're going down the street, they're pulling out their camera phones, trying to take a picture," said Williams.

He wasn't personally affected by breast cancer, until hearing the stories of those who were.

"It made us want to do something more and to show the public, we're here to protect them from this terrible disease," said Williams.

The color isn't all that makes the engine so unique.  It's a fully operational truck, normally, in the reserve line, but it can be used to respond to real emergencies.

Painting and maintaining the truck did not cost any taxpayer money.  All of the fuel expenses are covered through donations and firefighters volunteered their time to get the truck to all scheduled events.  Logos of local businesses cover the truck, all showing support of breast cancer research.  For a five dollar donation, anyone can sign, showing support for the cause.

"It makes me proud to be a firefighter in the city of Huber Heights and have the ability to do something like this," said Williams.

The Cancer Support Community of Western Ohio, based in Kettering, will receive 80% of the profits.  The rest will go to the Susan G. Komen Foundation.
