Researchers: Sugar is toxic

SAN FRANCISCO, Ca. (WDTN) - Some researchers believe that sugar is toxic. So much so, that they believe it should be taxed and regulated like alcohol.

Doctors from the University of California at San Francisco, say that obesity is the marker for sugar's evil doings.

"We recognize that societal intervention to reduce the supply and demand for sugar faces an uphill political battle against a powerful sugar lobby," they wrote.

In addition to taxing and regulation, the researchers say sales should be limited and number of fast food restaurants controlled.

They also suggest limiting sales to students during the school day.

The researchers said sugar meets four criteria for regulation that are largely accepted by public health experts. They are persuasiveness in society, toxicity, potential for abuse and negative impact on society.
