DAYTON, Ohio (WDTN) - Some women call it "the change". Doctors call it menopause and a local author is helping you handle it with a book and conference.
It's a rite of passage. If you follow genetics, it takes the path carved by your mother who followed her mother. It's menopause.
"I want women to see it's a new way of living. It's the time to enhance your life. This is your second phase of life," said Linda Hawkins.
It has not always been discussed. In many families, the topic is foreign.
"There is a connection I believe with women aging, when they say you're going through the change that automatically means you're an old woman, no one wants to admit they're getting older."
Linda Hawkins feels so strongly about the issue, she has written this book, "Yes, Real Women Do Sweat" and has developed a conference to discuss menopause. "About one in five women will get hair loss."
Dr. Candy Lewis is a naturopathic wellness expert. She says the body has 13 reasons for losing hair, one of which is the loss of estrogen, a marker in the menopause journey.
"Hormones tell hair when to grow, when to stop and when to come out," said Dr. Candy Lewis.
And doing so, according to its own plan.
Hawkins' conference on menopause includes doctor lewis as one of the guest lecturers.
It's set for June 23rd at Meadowbrook Country Club on Salem Avenue from 9:00 a.m. to 12:30pm.
