Heat Emergency plans activated

DAYTON, Ohio (WDTN) - Dayton area counties and communities have activated a heat emergency plans to help residents escape the excessively high temperatures.

In Dayton, the city is designating its recreation centers as “cooling centers” during regular business hours (6:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m.):

  • Greater Dayton Recreation Center, 2021 W. Third St.
  • Lohrey Recreation Center and Belmont Pool, 2366 Glenarm Ave.
  • Northwest Recreation Center, 1600 Princeton Dr.

The Greater Dayton RTA also opens its transit centers as cooling centers during normal business hours:

  • South: 2730 Lyons Rd.
  • North: 2075 Shiloh Springs Rd.
  • West: Westown Shopping Center
  • East: Eastown Shopping Center
  • Downtown: Wright Stop Plaza, 4 S. Main St.

In Greene County:

  • Beavercreek Senior Center – 3868 Dayton-Xenia Rd., Beavercreek; Monday – Thursday, 9 a.m. - 7 p.m.; Friday, 9 a.m. - 7 p.m.
  • Fairborn Senior Center – 325 3rd Street, Fairborn; 8:30 a.m. – 4:30 p.m.
  • Xenia Adult Recreation and Services Center – 130 E. Church Street, Xenia; 8 a.m. – 4 p.m.
  • Xenia Township Fire Station 1 – 8 Brush Row Rd, Xenia; 8 a.m. – 5 p.m.
  • Yellow Springs Senior Center – 227 Xenia Avenue; 10 a.m. – 4 p.m.
  • John Bryan Center – 100 Dayton Street; 8 a.m. – 5 p.m.

In Miami County:

  • Hobart Arena - 255 Adams St., Troy; 7 a.m. - 10 p.m.
  • Miami Valley Centre mall - 987 E. Ash St., Piqua; 10 a.m. - 9 p.m.
  • Troy Senior Citizens Center - 134 N. Market St., Troy; 9 a.m. - 4 p.m.
  • YMCA - Front Lobbies - 3060 S. Co. Rd. 25A, Troy; 5 a.m. - 10 p.m. & 223 W. High St., Piqua; 5 a.m. - 10 p.m.

Anyone in need of emergency services should call 911.

Reminders for Dealing with Excessive Heat
DO:

  • Check on elderly family members and neighbors and other at-risk individuals.
  • Use air conditioners or spend time in air-conditioned locations, such as malls or libraries.
  • Use portable electric fans to exhaust hot air from rooms or draw in cooler air.
  • Take a cool bath or shower.
  • Minimize direct exposure to the sun.
  • Stay hydrated – regularly drink water and other non-alcoholic fluids.
  • Eat light, cool, easy-to-digest foods, such as fruits or salads.
  • Wear loose fitting, light-colored clothes.
  • Know the symptoms of excessive heat exposure and the appropriate responses.

DON’T:

  • Direct the flow of portable electric fans toward yourself when the room temperature is hotter than 90 degrees.
  • Leave children and pets alone in cars for any amount of time.
  • Drink alcohol to try to stay cool.
  • Eat heavy, hot or hard-to-digest foods.
  • Wear heavy, dark clothing.
