DAYTON, Ohio (WDTN) - Halloween candy is every child's dream snack, but not every child should eat it.
More than six million children need to be extra careful about what they eat due to food allergies.
The Ohio Association of School Nurses says if your child is allergic, you should remember that the most common candies contain allergic triggers, including peanuts, milk, eggs, soy and wheat.
They can all cause severe, even fatal reactions.
Schools should take extra precautions.
"In a school setting, it's also critical for parents to talk to officials about what to do in case something does happen and it can also be celebrated without food. Halloween parties can involve non food treats," said Dr. Hemant Sharma, Ohio Association of School Nurses.
Dr. Sharma also advises that children need to be familiar with the specific ingredients that trigger their allergic reactions.
