BROOKVILLE, Ohio (WDTN) - It is National Diabetes Awareness Month and one little boy is a perfect example of how the disease can be controlled.

The number of children with diabetes is surging.

Ryan Wilkins is a fifth grader from Brookville.  He is also diabetic.  He manages his disease and is determined to live a healthy life.

Diagnosed at age nine, Ryan works hard at keeping his body in check.

"I just have to do my carbs, .the injections and everything," said Ryan.

Doctors say exercise and good nutrition are critical to properly manage diabetes.

His insulin pump helps regulate his blood sugar, needed for energy.  "This is  the pump.  It does all the math for me."
